The beef, swine and poultry industries have been adopting crossbreeding for years to their advantage. Moving to a crossbreeding programme and casting a wider net to find unique bloodlines can eradicate the negative effects of inbreeding. This has been a particular problem with pure bred dairy breeds, where it has long been recognised that inbreeding has had detrimental effect on yield, fertility, health and longevity.
Crossbreeding eradicates inbreeding and provides extra benefits (in addition to those gained from individual breed characteristics) due to the natural phenomenon known as hybrid vigour.
Taking advantage of hybrid vigour…
Hybrid vigour (or heterosis), is the lift in performance that occurs when two breeds are crossed. The benefits of hybrid vigour equates to an increase of 5% for milk production and around 10% for fertility, health and survival (over parent average). Therefore, a crossbred cow can be more efficient and easier to manage than her purebred herd mates and can help improve fertility, health and longevity – all of which can have a significant impact on profit.
