Friesians
The modern Friesian is the perfect breed for daughter fertility, lifespan, and for producing cows that are easy to get in calf and who have superb longevity.
Friesian genetics can be used as the third breed in a rotation where you are looking to keep stature down while maximising fertility and longevity. This makes Friesians an ideal option for HYVIG grazing herds! When using Friesian bulls in your HYVIG herd, select bulls that are positive for milk with good udders and management traits. These positive milk bulls may be lower for Body Condition Score but compared to a pure Holstein they will still carry more condition and get in calve much easier.
The other really unique thing about Genus ABS Friesians is TransitionRight. This index is unique to Genus ABS, ranking bulls based on their daughters’ ability to get through the transition period with fewer health issues. This improves operational efficiency and reduces costs leading to increased profitability with the top bull saving £136 compared to the bottom ranked bulls. The bulls in this guide are all 4* and 5* bulls to ensure smooth transition periods and help drive profitability.
TransitionRight Economic Sire Ranking
The economic impact of sire genetics on cow transition health is significant for any size dairy operation. By choosing a 5-star sire, your operation is projected to save approximately £68 in preventative or reactive costs per cow per lactation over a breed-average 3-Star sire.
